Health transcends borders, making access to quality medical care a shared responsibility and a powerful avenue for strengthening regional solidarity. Across the East African Community (EAC), military medical professionals continue to demonstrate how defence capabilities can serve communities while fostering cooperation among Partner States.
The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) Medical Team joined counterparts from EAC Partner States during the 6th EAC Armed Forces Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) Week in Tanzania, providing free specialised healthcare services to local communities.
Working alongside other military health professionals at Bagamoyo District Hospital, the KDF Medical Team provided specialised services in Ophthalmology, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Internal Medicine, Dermatology, Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT), Orthopaedics and Dental care, complemented by Pharmacy services.
The medical outreach brought essential healthcare closer to communities while demonstrating the wider contribution of armed forces to human security and societal wellbeing. Through such engagements, military medical expertise becomes an important bridge between defence institutions and the populations they serve.
Beyond the provision of healthcare, the CIMIC Week offers military health professionals from across the region an opportunity to work together, exchange expertise and strengthen professional relationships. The interaction enhances knowledge sharing and interoperability while building networks that can support coordinated responses to public health emergencies, humanitarian crises and other regional challenges.
During the official launch at the Tanzania People’s Defence Force (TPDF) Lugalo Golf Club in Dar es Salaam, the Chief of Staff at TPDF Headquarters, Lieutenant General S.H. Othman, commended the participating Partner States for their dedication to the regional integration agenda.
He also lauded the continued support of EAC Heads of State and Defence Chiefs in advancing the initiative, underscoring the importance of collective action in strengthening cooperation and addressing challenges affecting communities across the region.
KDF’s participation in the 6th EAC Armed Forces CIMIC Week demonstrates the expanding role of military cooperation beyond traditional security responsibilities. By combining professional medical expertise with humanitarian service, the participating armed forces are contributing to healthier communities while strengthening trust, interoperability and regional cohesion.
The initiative further affirms the value of Civil-Military Cooperation as an instrument for bringing defence institutions closer to communities and advancing the broader goals of East African integration.
Through shared expertise, compassionate service and regional partnership, the EAC Armed Forces continue to demonstrate that safeguarding the region also means protecting the health, dignity and wellbeing of its people.
