1ST CANINE REGIMENT MARKS 14TH ANNIVERSARY WITH OUTREACH TO CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

Community outreach programmes remain a vital pillar of the Kenya Defence Forces’ engagement with the civilian population, strengthening the enduring bond between the military and the communities it serves. Beyond their humanitarian impact, such initiatives foster goodwill, build trust and promote a shared responsibility for the welfare of vulnerable members of society.

As part of activities marking its 14th Anniversary, the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) 1st Canine Regiment conducted a Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) outreach programme at Good Shepherd Children’s Home in Chokaa, Embakasi East Sub-County, Nairobi. The visit, which focused on supporting children with special needs, reflected the Regiment’s commitment to extending service beyond its operational mandate and making a meaningful difference in the lives of vulnerable members of the community.

The Regiment leadership and personnel donated foodstuffs, diapers and other essential supplies before spending time with the children through mentorship and recreational activities. They also undertook community service within the institution, including cleaning the compound, tending the gardens and splitting firewood, helping to improve the home’s environment for both the children and their caregivers.

Speaking during the engagement, Lieutenant Colonel Alex Maina of KDF reaffirmed the Regiment’s dedication to serving the nation both in operations and through community engagement.

“As we celebrate our 14th Anniversary, we are reminded that service to the nation extends beyond our operational responsibilities. Giving back to the community and supporting vulnerable members of society strengthens national unity, reinforces social cohesion and reflects the values of the Kenya Defence Forces,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the institution’s management, Brother Cipriano Certicio Jr. of the Missionaries of the Poor expressed gratitude to the Regiment for its generosity and applauded the personnel for remembering children with special needs during their anniversary celebrations.

The outreach programme brought the 1st Canine Regiment’s 14th Anniversary celebrations to a meaningful close, capping a series of commemorative activities with an act of compassion and service. The initiative underscored the Kenya Defence Forces’ enduring commitment to civil-military cooperation, humanitarian service and national development through impactful community engagement.
