SPORTS DIPLOMACY STRENGTHENS CIVIL-MILITARY BONDS IN ELGEYO-MARAKWET

In a powerful display of unity through sport, the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) under Operation Maliza Uhalifu recently reinforced its Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) efforts by participating in a friendly football match in Elgeyo-Marakwet County. The match brought together KDF’s Todo Football Club and the local Tot Football Club, highlighting the military’s evolving approach of blending security operations with meaningful community engagement.

Held in the town of Tot, the match drew an enthusiastic crowd of local residents who turned out in large numbers to support both teams. The vibrant atmosphere reflected a shared sense of purpose, as football became a unifying platform for interaction, trust-building, and social cohesion between soldiers and civilians.

The event was graced by KDF leadership in the area of responsibility. Their presence underscored the importance that KDF places on CIMIC initiatives as a key pillar in fostering peace and stability in operational areas.

On the pitch, both teams delivered an engaging and competitive performance, showcasing discipline, teamwork, and determination. While Tot FC secured a 4–2 victory over Todo FC, the result was secondary to the spirit of sportsmanship and mutual respect that defined the encounter.

Beyond the final score, the match served a deeper strategic purpose. For KDF, such engagements are instrumental in building trust with local communities, enhancing cooperation, and promoting peaceful coexistence. By interacting with residents in informal and positive settings like sports, military personnel are able to break down barriers, strengthen relationships, and reinforce their role not only as protectors but also as partners in community development.

The initiative reflects KDF’s broader commitment to “winning hearts and minds” while maintaining security across regions affected by instability, including parts of Baringo County. It demonstrates that sustainable peace is not achieved through force alone, but through unity, collaboration, and active community participation.

As Operation Maliza Uhalifu continues, such moments of connection underscore the vital role of sports and social engagement in building lasting peace and resilience in Kenya’s communities.
