In line with its commitment to environmental conservation and community engagement, the Kenya Navy today conducted a large scale communal clean up exercise in Likoni, Mombasa County.
The exercise was flagged off by the Commander Kenya Navy Fleet, Brigadier Mohammed Shemote, before participants dispersed into three teams covering different routes. One team cleaned the area from Check Point to Likoni Catholic Church, the second worked from Kenya Navy Base Mtongwe to Likoni Catholic Church, while the third team covered the stretch from the Likoni Ferry crossing to the Catholic Church. The coordinated effort ensured that key public spaces and access roads within Likoni were thoroughly cleaned.
Throughout the exercise, participants collected several tonnes of waste and unblocked drainage systems, significantly improving sanitation within the area. The activity also raised awareness on proper waste management and demonstrated the importance of collective responsibility in protecting the environment.
Speaking during the closing ceremony, Brigadier Mohammed Shemote noted that the day’s event marked the beginning of an important Kenya Navy initiative aimed at strengthening collaboration with communities within its area of operation and other key stakeholders in championing environmental stewardship. He emphasized that maintaining a clean environment requires a whole of government and whole of society approach, adding that the Kenya Navy remains committed to partnering with individuals and organisations dedicated to environmental conservation. He further expressed pride in standing alongside the people of the Coast region, renowned for its rich natural heritage and commitment to safeguarding the environment.
Commander Kenya Navy Base Mtongwe, Brigadier William Kiprotich also underscored the importance of partnerships in addressing environmental challenges. He observed that the gathering reflected the power of collaboration among institutions entrusted with safeguarding national security, managing public resources, delivering essential services and nurturing the spiritual well being of society. He noted that cleanliness is a reflection of discipline, responsibility and respect for both life and the environment, adding that a healthy environment forms the foundation for security, prosperity and moral integrity.
The exercise concluded with renewed commitment from all stakeholders to sustain similar initiatives in the future as part of a shared responsibility to preserve the environment for present and future generations. The event was attended by senior officers, principal staff officers, officers, service personnel, representatives from the National and County Governments, the local administration, community-based organisations, the Church and members of the local community.
