PROTECTING PEACE ON TWO FRONTS

PROTECTING PEACE ON TWO FRONTS

Peacekeeping is often measured by the ability to confront armed conflict, but in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya’s 5th Quick Reaction Force (KENQRF 5) is proving that today’s missions demand equal resolve against invisible threats. As an Ebola outbreak unfolds across Beni, Kenyan peacekeepers continue to safeguard communities from both violent extremism and a deadly epidemic, demonstrating that modern peace support operations extend well beyond conventional military tasks.

Operating in the strategically important localities of Mbau, Mandumbi and Oicha, KENQRF 5 has sustained an uninterrupted operational presence despite the heightened health risks. Day and night dominance patrols continue across the Beni-Mavivi-Mbau-Oicha axis, denying the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) and other armed groups the opportunity to exploit uncertainty or regain freedom of movement. Rather than reducing their operational tempo, the contingent has adapted its methods to ensure that security operations remain effective while protecting both troops and civilians from disease.

The peacekeepers have successfully integrated stringent Ebola prevention measures into routine tactical operations. Masks, gloves and regular hand hygiene have become standard alongside helmets, body armour and other operational equipment. Patrol bases maintain handwashing facilities, while vehicles and equipment are disinfected after every mission, ensuring that force protection and public health objectives advance together without compromising operational effectiveness.

These visible precautions have produced benefits that extend beyond the military mission. By consistently demonstrating disciplined health practices during engagements with local communities, the peacekeepers reinforce public confidence and encourage the adoption of preventive behaviours that help reduce the spread of the virus. The trust built through these interactions also strengthens cooperation with local residents, whose timely information remains vital in disrupting the activities of armed groups and enhancing overall security.

Fear often creates opportunities for instability, particularly during public health emergencies. Recognising this reality, KENQRF 5 has deliberately maintained its presence in communities most affected by the outbreak, ensuring that vulnerable populations are not left exposed to both the threat of Ebola and the danger posed by armed groups seeking to exploit weakened security conditions.

The contingent’s ability to confront two simultaneous threats has helped preserve the relative calm achieved across the Beni-Mavivi-Mbau-Oicha corridor. Every patrol reinforces the confidence of local communities while demonstrating that security and humanitarian responsibility are inseparable in contemporary peacekeeping operations.

For KENQRF 5, the mission remains unchanged despite the evolving challenges. Their masks may soften their voices, but they do not diminish their determination. In a region where violence and disease have both tested the resilience of communities, Kenya’s peacekeepers continue to stand watch, reaffirming that lasting peace is secured not only through strength of arms but also through steadfast service, discipline and compassion.
