Strategic infrastructure delivery has emerged as a critical enabler of public service transformation, economic growth, and social progress, as governments increasingly leverage institutional capabilities to accelerate national development, Beyond its core defence mandate, the Ministry of Defence (MoD), through the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), continues to play an expanding role in delivering complex national infrastructure projects that strengthen governance systems, enhance public services, and support Kenya’s broader development agenda.
The Principal Secretary for Defence, Dr. Patrick Mariru, recently undertook two significant engagements in the Coast region, underscoring the Ministry’s growing contribution to national infrastructure development through strategic partnerships and technical execution.
In Mombasa County, Dr. Mariru joined the Auditor General, FCPA Nancy Gathungu, and the Governor of Mombasa County, H.E. Abdulswamad Nassir, during the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of an ultra-modern Auditor General’s Regional Office. The project marks a significant investment in strengthening public accountability architecture and expanding access to audit services across the coastal region.
The new regional office is expected to enhance oversight mechanisms, improve operational efficiency, and reinforce transparency in the management of public resources. The facility reflects the Government’s continued commitment to building stronger institutions capable of delivering accountable and citizen-centred governance.
Speaking during the ceremony, Auditor General Nancy Gathungu described the project as a strategic investment that will improve service delivery while strengthening prudent public financial management and institutional accountability.
The project, which will be delivered under the supervision of the Ministry of Defence through KDF’s engineering and technical expertise, is scheduled for completion within 12 months. The initiative further highlights the growing confidence in the Defence establishment’s capacity to execute high-impact national infrastructure projects with efficiency, discipline, and quality assurance.
Dr. Mariru noted that the project builds on an expanding record of successful inter-agency collaboration, citing the recently completed Auditor General’s Regional Office in Embu County, also supervised by KDF. The continuity of such projects signals a deliberate national approach to harnessing defence engineering capabilities in support of broader state-building and institutional development objectives.
Later in Kilifi County, the Principal Secretary conducted a site inspection of the proposed Kilifi Stadium alongside the Principal Secretary for Youth Affairs and the Creative Economy, Mr. Fikirini Jacobs, ahead of the anticipated groundbreaking ceremony to be presided over by President H.E. Dr. William Ruto.
The proposed stadium represents more than a sports facility; it is a strategic socio-economic investment expected to unlock youth potential, nurture sporting talent, create employment opportunities, and stimulate local economic activity across Kilifi County and the wider coastal region. By investing in sports infrastructure, the Government continues to position youth empowerment, talent development, and community transformation as integral pillars of national progress.
The Coast engagements reaffirm the Ministry of Defence’s evolving strategic role as a national enabler of development, where military engineering capability is increasingly being leveraged to support infrastructure modernization, institutional strengthening, and socio-economic transformation.
Through such initiatives, the Government continues to demonstrate that national development is best advanced through coordinated inter-agency collaboration, strategic planning, and the efficient deployment of national capabilities in service of the people.
