As governments increasingly embrace inter-agency collaboration to optimise national resources, strengthen institutional capacity and enhance service delivery, strategic partnerships between security and public service institutions continue to play a critical role in advancing national development. Such collaborations not only foster knowledge exchange and operational efficiency but also create sustainable frameworks for building resilient institutions capable of addressing evolving national priorities.
Within this framework, the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and the National Youth Service (NYS) reaffirmed their commitment to deepening institutional cooperation during a strategic engagement held at Defence Headquarters in Nairobi.
The meeting, hosted by Chief of the Defence Forces, General Charles Kahariri, brought together senior leadership from both institutions, including National Youth Service Chairperson Lieutenant General (Rtd) Adan Mulata and Deputy Commandant General Mr Edward Yaite, in discussions aimed at strengthening collaboration and identifying new avenues for mutually beneficial cooperation.
The engagement provided an opportunity for both institutions to review their longstanding partnership while exploring future cooperation under a government-to-government framework designed to enhance institutional effectiveness across various sectors.
Speaking during the meeting, General Kahariri acknowledged the enduring collaboration between KDF and NYS, noting that the two institutions have maintained close working relations in several strategic areas over the years. He underscored the importance of sustaining such partnerships in strengthening national capacity and advancing shared institutional objectives.
Lieutenant General (Rtd) Mulata commended the role played by KDF in supporting the growth and transformation of the National Youth Service, observing that KDF’s representation within the NYS Council has significantly contributed to the professionalisation of the service.
He further noted that the Defence Forces’ expertise has been instrumental in enabling the National Youth Service to develop and operationalise key service frameworks, reinforcing the institution’s ability to effectively execute its mandate.
Beyond a ceremonial courtesy call, the meeting reflected a broader strategic commitment to institutional synergy, where collaboration is leveraged as a force multiplier for national capability development. By aligning future engagements with KDF’s strategic priorities and NYS institutional aspirations, the partnership is poised to enhance operational readiness, organisational effectiveness and long-term public service impact.
As Kenya continues to strengthen whole-of-government approaches to national development and resilience, partnerships between institutions such as KDF and NYS remain essential in building a more capable, coordinated and future-ready public sector.
