Kenya’s ambition to become a premier destination for international sporting, cultural and convention events is steadily taking shape through the delivery of landmark infrastructure projects designed to meet world-class standards while advancing national development. As these transformative facilities near completion, they promise not only to elevate the country’s global profile but also stimulate economic growth, create employment opportunities and expand opportunities for sports, tourism and cultural exchange.
To assess progress on these flagship projects, the Assistant Chief of the Defence Forces in charge of Personnel and Logistics (ACDF P&L), Major General Peter Limo, conducted an inspection of the ongoing construction of the Raila Amolo Odinga International Stadium, formerly Talanta Stadium, and the modernization works at Bomas of Kenya.
During the visit, Major General Limo received comprehensive project briefs outlining construction progress, key milestones achieved and the implementation of structural, safety and quality standards. He reviewed the pace of works and emphasized the need to sustain the current momentum to ensure timely completion while maintaining the highest levels of quality.
At the Raila Amolo Odinga International Stadium, the ACDF P&L toured the main arena, spectator stands, hospitality suites, media facilities and other supporting infrastructure. Once completed, the stadium is expected to meet international specifications, significantly strengthening Kenya’s capacity to host major continental and global sporting competitions while providing modern facilities for athletes, officials, media and spectators.
The inspection later proceeded to Bomas of Kenya, where extensive modernization works are transforming the iconic facility into a world-class convention, cultural and events destination while preserving its rich national heritage. The upgrades are expected to expand Kenya’s ability to host high-level conferences, exhibitions and cultural showcases, reinforcing Nairobi’s position as a regional hub for international engagements.
A key component of the development is the multi-facility Bomas International Convention Centre (BICC), which will feature an 11,000-seat convention centre alongside sports and recreation facilities, an animal orphanage, hotel accommodation and enhanced cultural amenities. The project is among the Government’s flagship infrastructure initiatives being implemented by the Ministry of Defence through the Kenya Defence Forces.
Major General Limo commended the contractors, engineers and all stakeholders for the progress achieved, urging them to maintain close coordination and adherence to the required standards to ensure successful delivery within the established timelines. He observed that the projects will generate lasting economic and social benefits by creating employment opportunities, supporting tourism and positioning Kenya as a preferred venue for international sporting, cultural and convention events.
The inspection highlighted the Kenya Defence Forces’ central role in delivering strategic national infrastructure that supports economic transformation, strengthens Kenya’s international competitiveness and enhances the country’s readiness to host world-class events across sport, culture and business.
