Protecting civilians in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo demands mobility, adaptability and a sustained presence in areas vulnerable to attacks by armed groups. Rather than remaining in fixed locations, United Nations peacekeepers under the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) continue to adjust their operational posture to respond to evolving security threats and extend protection to communities at risk.
Demonstrating this approach, the Kenya Quick Reaction Force (KENQRF 5) has expanded its area of operations after consolidating stability along the Mavivi–Mbau–Musuku–Mandumbi corridor. The contingent has now extended operations to the Mavivi–Beni–Mangina–Mandubiena axis, enhancing security along another critical route used by civilians and humanitarian actors.
To support the expanded mission, the contingent has established Mobile Operating Bases closer to vulnerable communities. These forward positions improve operational reach, reduce response times to security incidents and provide a stronger deterrent against armed groups seeking to exploit remote areas. The enhanced presence also creates a more secure environment for daily economic activities, humanitarian access and freedom of movement.
The forward bases further enable intelligence-led patrols and sustained engagement with local communities, strengthening early warning mechanisms while disrupting the movement and activities of illegal armed groups. Working closely with community leaders, the peacekeepers continue to build trust and encourage information sharing that supports timely security responses.
The expanded deployment reinforces MONUSCO’s mandate to protect civilians and stabilize conflict-affected areas. By extending its operational footprint, the Kenya Quick Reaction Force is denying armed groups freedom of movement, safeguarding key transport corridors and helping create conditions that support lasting peace, stability and recovery across eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.
