Strong and enduring defence partnerships are built on mutual trust, shared strategic interests and sustained collaboration in developing capabilities to address evolving security challenges. It is against this backdrop that the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) hosted a high-level United States delegation for a bilateral engagement aimed at strengthening defence cooperation and enhancing operational capabilities.
The delegation comprised the Commander of the United States Africa Command (USAFRICOM), General Dagvin Anderson, the Adjutant General of the Massachusetts National Guard, Major General Gary Keefe and the United States Defence Attaché to Kenya Colonel Scott Polasek.
The delegation held discussions with KDF leadership led by Chief of the Defence Forces, General Charles Kahariri, on areas of mutual interest, including institutional capacity building, professional military education and cooperation in emerging security domains.
The bilateral discussions focused on enhancing collaboration in key capability areas that contribute to the operational effectiveness and long-term institutional development of the KDF. Among the priority areas deliberated were support to the Kenya Defence Forces Non-Commissioned Officers (NCO) Academy, strengthening Special Operations capabilities and expanding cooperation in cybersecurity to enhance resilience against evolving security threats.
Recognising the growing importance of military engineering in both defence and national development, the leaders explored opportunities to strengthen engineering capabilities in support of the KDF’s secondary role. The discussions underscored the importance of enhancing the KDF’s capacity to undertake infrastructure development, humanitarian assistance and disaster response operations in support of national resilience.
The two sides further reaffirmed their shared commitment to strengthening border security through continued collaboration in training, technical exchanges and capacity-building initiatives. They acknowledged that closer cooperation and the exchange of expertise remain critical in addressing transnational security challenges and promoting regional peace and stability.
The engagement underscored the enduring strategic partnership between the Kenya Defence Forces and the United States, reaffirming the mutual commitment to advancing defence cooperation through sustained engagements, interoperability and the development of capable, professional and mission-ready forces.
