STRENGTHENING ACCOUNTABILITY THROUGH DIALOGUE

STRENGTHENING ACCOUNTABILITY THROUGH DIALOGUE

Strengthening accountability within a military institution depends not only on robust oversight systems but also on open communication that encourages trust, shared responsibility and continuous professional growth. Regular engagements between leaders and personnel provide an opportunity to address emerging challenges, reinforce institutional values and cultivate a culture where ethical conduct and transparency guide every aspect of service.

The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) advanced this objective when the Chief of Audit, Directorate of Oversight, Compliance and Accountability (DOCA), Brigadier Elijah Gatere, convened a Baraza at the Headquarters’ Corporal Club. The forum brought together officers, warrant officers and senior non-commissioned officers for an interactive discussion on professionalism, ethical leadership and accountability.

Addressing the participants, Brigadier Gatere emphasized the importance of upholding the core values of the Kenya Defence Forces by maintaining the highest standards of discipline, integrity and transparency in the execution of duty. He observed that accountability is central to operational effectiveness and plays a critical role in sustaining public confidence in the institution.

“Accountability is a shared responsibility. Through continuous engagement and effective oversight, we strengthen not only compliance but also public trust in the Kenya Defence Forces,” said Brigadier Gatere.

He encouraged personnel to embrace oversight mechanisms, comply with established policies and procedures, and foster a culture of responsibility across every level of the Service. Brigadier Gatere further noted that safeguarding the reputation of the Kenya Defence Forces depends on the collective commitment of every service member to exemplary conduct, ethical leadership and unwavering adherence to military values.

The Baraza also featured a spiritual renewal session led by guest speaker Major (Fr) Francis Mbaga, who challenged participants to reflect on five dimensions of personal well-being: spiritual, relational, purposeful, financial and emotional health. He observed that maintaining balance in these areas strengthens resilience, reinforces ethical decision-making and enhances professional performance, enabling personnel to serve with integrity while contributing to a more accountable and effective Kenya Defence Forces.
