Access to quality education is fundamentally shaped not only by curriculum and teaching capacity, but also by the learning environments in which children are educated. Safe, adequate, and dignified school infrastructure remains a critical enabler of academic performance, learner wellbeing, and long-term community development. As governments increasingly adopt whole-of-government approaches to accelerate social transformation, strategic institutional support for education infrastructure has become an important pillar in expanding equitable access to quality learning opportunities.
The Ministry of Defence (MoD), through the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), has commenced the rehabilitation and construction of learning infrastructure in selected schools across Laikipia County following a Presidential directive aimed at improving access to quality education and enhancing learning environments in the region.
The intervention, undertaken following a Presidential directive, seeks to address longstanding infrastructural challenges affecting schools in the region while improving learning environments for both learners and teachers. As access to quality education remains closely linked to the availability of safe, adequate, and dignified facilities, the initiative reflects a broader whole-of-government approach to strengthening human capital development and empowering communities through education.
This week, Defence Principal Secretary Dr. Patrick Mariru, accompanied by Laikipia East Member of Parliament Hon. Mwangi Kiunjuri and Laikipia County Woman Representative Hon. Jane Kagiri, conducted a two-day preliminary inspection tour of eight schools identified for the intervention. The institutions visited included Suguroi, Ngano, Naiturushi, Karai, Mwituria, Kijabe, Thome, and Kibubungi Comprehensive Schools.
The proposed infrastructure works are expected to significantly improve learning conditions by easing classroom congestion, enhancing safety, and creating more conducive spaces for both learners and teachers. Beyond physical construction, the initiative represents a strategic investment in human capital development by strengthening the foundational environment necessary for educational success. By improving school infrastructure, the initiative contributes directly to creating equitable opportunities for children while strengthening community resilience through education.
Speaking during the inspection visits, Dr. Mariru reaffirmed the Ministry of Defence’s commitment to supporting national development priorities beyond its traditional defence mandate, noting that strategic institutional capabilities can be leveraged to deliver impactful public infrastructure projects that directly improve citizens’ lives.
He emphasised that investment in school infrastructure is essential in creating conducive learning environments, improving educational outcomes, and restoring dignity for learners in schools that have struggled with inadequate facilities over the years.
Laikipia East Member of Parliament Hon. Mwangi Kiunjuri welcomed the intervention, observing that sustained investment in education infrastructure remains central to long-term socio-economic transformation and national progress. He noted that improving school facilities is not only an education imperative but also a strategic investment in the future of communities.
The initiative underscores the expanding role of the Ministry of Defence and the Kenya Defence Forces in supporting national development through strategic infrastructure delivery. By deploying institutional capacity to address critical social needs, the intervention reflects a broader model of integrated national service where defence capabilities contribute meaningfully to education, community empowerment, and sustainable development.
