Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) troops deployed in Somalia Sector II under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), joined the global community in commemorating International Women’s Day (IWD). Troops across the Sector held vibrant celebrations to commend the achievements of women/girls worldwide and to reaffirm their commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment.
Under the theme “Give to Gain,” the annual event highlighted the importance of investing time, resources and support to women as a pathway to accelerate global prosperity and advancing gender equality.
At Dhobley, KDF’s Female Engagement Team (FET) hosted a celebration that brought together female personnel from the KDF, Jubaland Police Force, staff from Dhobley General Hospital, and women from neighboring villages. The event served as a platform to recognize and appreciate the contributions of women across the security, health, and community sectors.
In his address, the Commander Dhobley- Col Morris Wasomi, emphasized the significance of IWD as a moment to recognize the achievements, resilience, and leadership of women in society. He noted that the day provides an opportunity to celebrate the progress women have made and to reaffirm the commitment to supporting their continued empowerment. He further commended the Female Engagement Team (FET) for their dedication and impactful work within the Dhobley community.
At Kismayo, the Chief Guest, Hon. Deka Aden Mohamed- Jubaland Member of Parliament, commended female troops for their dedication to the stabilization mission, noting that women play a critical role in the success of security operations.
“I urge you to carry out your duties with boldness and confidence as a tribute to the women who have fought tirelessly for gender equality,” she said. She further encouraged them to pursue independence and support one another through collaboration rather than competition.
KDF commanders present applauded the female personnel for their sacrifice, resilience and professionalism in the mission. The noted that women bring valuable perspectives that strengthen daily operations. He reaffirmed the force’s commitment to empowering female troops through mentorship and leadership opportunities, emphasizing that they are equally capable as their male counterparts.
Representatives from the KDF, the Sierra Leone Police Formed Police Unit, and the Jubaland Security Forces also shared their experiences as women in uniform, discussing challenges faced and exploring ways to strengthen mutual support in their daily duties.
In the days leading up to the event, Sector II female troops conducted CIMIC outreach programs in Kismayo Level II hospital. The sessions focused on women’s health issues including menstrual hygiene, family planning, maternal healthcare during and after pregnancy, and maternal mental health. The initiative forms part of AUSSOM’s broader effort to strengthen relations with local communities.
Also present during the event were Jubaland Members of Parliament; Shire Abdi Mohamed, Foss Ali Abdirahman and Mrs. Halima Ali Osman- Founder & Director Juvenile Humanitarian and Development Organization (JUHDO).
This year’s celebration comes 115 years after the first International Women’s Day was observed in 1911, marking more than a century of advocacy and progress toward gender equality.
