HANDS OF VALOR: STRENGTHENING STABILTY THROUGH COMPASSIONATE ENGAGEMENT

In contemporary security operations, the path to lasting peace extends beyond conventional military action to include meaningful engagement with local communities. In the Jaradam area of Garissa County, Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) troops are demonstrating this principle through targeted Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) initiatives that place people at the centre of stability efforts.

Under the theme “Standing Together Jaradam KDF Troops with the People of Amuma, Strengthening Ties for Peace and Stability,” a recent outreach at Amuma Centre highlighted the strategic role of non-kinetic operations in fostering trust, enhancing cooperation, and consolidating security gains within the broader Jarajila operational environment, including Amuma and Fafi areas.

At its core, the engagement reflected a deliberate effort to address immediate community needs while reinforcing long-term relationships between security forces and civilians. Through coordinated humanitarian assistance, KDF troops supported over fifty vulnerable households with essential food supplies, helping to ease food insecurity challenges in the area. The structured distribution prioritised those most in need, including the elderly, widows, and families facing economic hardship—underscoring a people-first approach to operations.

Complementing the humanitarian support was a medical outreach component that brought basic healthcare services directly to the community. More than 40 children and adults received medical attention, including general health assessments, treatment for common ailments, and guidance on hygiene and disease prevention. In regions where access to healthcare can be limited, such interventions not only address immediate concerns but also contribute to building healthier, more resilient communities.

Recognising the importance of education in long-term stability, the troops also distributed exercise books and learning materials to school-going children. This initiative aimed to support continued learning, bridge resource gaps, and encourage academic progress—an investment in the future of the community and a key pillar in breaking cycles of vulnerability.

The success of the outreach was anchored in strong collaboration between KDF personnel and local leadership structures. Officers leading the activity worked closely with the area Chief, community elders, and Border Patrol Unit (BPU) personnel based at Amuma, ensuring the exercise was well-coordinated, inclusive, and responsive to local realities. Such partnerships are vital in aligning security efforts with community priorities and sustaining mutual trust.

Beyond the tangible support provided, the outreach carried a deeper strategic impact. It reinforced the presence of KDF not only as a security provider but also as a committed partner in community wellbeing. The appreciation expressed by residents reflects the value of consistent, respectful engagement in strengthening civil-military relations.

“Hands of Valor” captures the essence of modern military effectiveness—where strength is measured not only by capability in combat but also by the ability to uplift, support, and connect with the communities served. In places like Amuma, these engagements are not just acts of goodwill; they are integral to building the trust and stability upon which lasting peace depends.
