HONOURING SERVICE, DEDICATION TO DUTY AND SACRIFICE

Recognition of exemplary service and dedication to duty plays a vital role in fostering professionalism, reinforcing the values that underpin peace support operations and boosting troop’s morale.

In line with this commitment, Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) troops serving under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) were recently awarded African Union (AU) Medals of Honour in recognition of their contributions to peace, security and stability in Somalia.

The medals were presented during a ceremony presided over by Brig Edward Banda, Sector II Commander, on behalf of the AUSSOM Force Commander Lt Gen Sam Kavuma, and attended by the Jubaland Minister for Security, Maj Gen Yusuf Hussein Osman, alongside with the Head of Office of the United Nations Transitional Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS) in Kismayo, Fernando Tome.

Brig Banda applauded the troops for their professionalism and dedication throughout their 14-month deployment, noting that their efforts had significantly contributed to the improved security, stability, and development witnessed across the sector.

“May these medals inspire us to remain humble in honor and steadfast to duty. May they serve as a lasting reminder of synergy, professionalism, and dedication which characterize our tour of duty, “said Brig Banda.

Maj Gen Yusuf Hussein Osman, expressed gratitude to the Kenyan Contingent for executing the AUSSOM mission mandate professionally while maintaining cordial relations with local communities and the host administration. He also lauded KDF’s contribution to enhancing the capabilities of Somali Security Forces through joint training programmes.

Similarly, Fernando Tome, described the medals as fitting recognition of KDF’s commitment to supporting stability in Somalia. He noted that the contingent’s achievements had made a significant impact in Kismayo and across Jubaland.

The recognition reflects AUSSOM’s appreciation of the commitment and sacrifices made by troops serving in Somalia, as well as serves as a reminder of the professionalism and sense of duty required to advance the mission’s mandate in a challenging operational environment.
