JKUAT DELEGATION VISITS KENYA NAVY

Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) delegation led by the Dean School of Mechanical, Manufacturing and Material Engineering (SOMMME), Department of Mechanical Engineering, Dr. Mutuku Muvengei, visited Kenya Navy for a familiarization tour.

The delegation paid a courtesy call on the Commander Kenya Navy, Major General Paul Otieno, where they expressed their appreciation to the leadership of the Kenya Navy and the Kenya Defence Forces for the ongoing support provided to JKUAT, particularly in facilitating industrial attachments for students enrolled in the Marine Engineering degree programs. The visit aimed to explore opportunities to further strengthen the existing collaboration.

Discussions cantered on expanding areas of cooperation in maritime related education and training. Key areas of focus included co-developing specialized maritime technical and nautical courses, facilitating faculty exchange programs, engaging in collaborative research and development initiatives, and sharing training facilities and equipment.

The visit also covered the Kenya Naval Training College, where the delegation was introduced to the Full Mission Bridge Simulator (FMBS). A demonstration highlighted the simulator’s utility, showcasing its ability to provide scenario-based training that allows Kenya Navy personnel to practice navigation, command and control, ship handling, and tactical manoeuvres. This advanced training tool enables personnel to gain valuable experience in a simulated environment before being deployed to actual operations aboard Kenya Navy weapon and logistics platforms. The simulator offers trainees the opportunity to respond to complex maritime scenarios in a realistic yet controlled setting.

The tour concluded with a visit to the Fire Fighting and Damage Control (FF&DC) simulators, both of which are vital training facilities. The firefighting simulator provides naval personnel with specialized skills in combating fire both aboard ships and ashore establishments. Meanwhile, the damage control simulator equips trainees with requisite skills in containment of damages that result in water ingress onboard vessels.

Present during the visit were Commandant Kenya Naval Training College (KNTC), Colonel Benson Karuimbo, KNTC Chief Instructor, Lieutenant Colonel Ernest Ndirangu, senior officers and officers.
