Environmental conservation is a true symbol of hope rooted in the promise of a better tomorrow. By participating in environmental conservation exercises on the frontlines, troops demonstrate that peacekeeping extends beyond maintaining security to fostering conditions in which host communities and future generations can thrive.
On 8 June 2026, Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) troops serving under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) in Sector II participated in a tree-planting exercise at the Kismayo Base in commemoration of World Environment Day, observed annually on 05 June.
Led by the Jubaland Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Ayid Suleiman Hashi, the initiative sought to promote environmental conservation and climate action under the global theme, “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.”
In his address, Minister Hashi commended the strong turnout by personnel from the KDF, Jubaland Security Forces, Sierra Leone Formed Police Unit, United Nations personnel, and airport civilian staff, noting that the exercise demonstrated unity and cooperation among peacekeepers and stakeholders. He further emphasized that such initiatives foster long-term trust between AUSSOM forces and local communities while helping mitigate environmental challenges such as flooding and soil erosion during seasonal rains.
Speaking during the exercise, Lt Col Galgalo Liban of KDF, said the activity aligns with the KDF’s Environmental Soldier Programme. He noted that tree planting not only restores ecosystems but also strengthens relations between AUSSOM and the host government.
The exercise underscored AUSSOM’s commitment to stabilization efforts through environmental stewardship and community engagement, contributing to a greener and more environmentally resilient Somalia.
