STRENGTHENING STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS THROUGH DEFENCE DIPLOMACY

In an evolving security landscape where collaboration is imperative, defence diplomacy continues to play a critical role in advancing regional stability. This was evident as General Charles Kahariri, Chief of the Defence Forces, hosted Ambassador El Hadji Ibrahima Diene, the Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (SRCC) for Somalia and Head of the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), at Defence Headquarters in Nairobi.

The high-level engagement underscored Kenya’s commitment to strengthening strategic partnerships aimed at fostering peace and security in Somalia and the wider region. Central to the discussions was the progress made under the newly developed AUSSOM strategy, with a particular focus on enhancing mission effectiveness amid a dynamic and increasingly complex operational environment.

Deliberations also examined the pivotal role of Troop Contributing Countries (TCCs) in supporting Somalia’s political transition, alongside the implications of emerging actors within the mission space. These conversations highlighted the need for sustained coordination, adaptability, and unified approaches to address evolving security challenges.

General Kahariri commended the dedication and professionalism of AUSSOM forces, including the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), recognizing their enduring sacrifice in the pursuit of stability in Somalia. He further emphasized the importance of ongoing training initiatives, noting that capacity building remains essential in enhancing operational readiness and overall mission success.

Ambassador Diene, in turn, expressed appreciation for Kenya’s unwavering contribution and leadership within the mission, acknowledging its role in driving cohesive regional security efforts under the African Union framework.

The meeting ultimately reflected a shared strategic vision between Kenya and the African Union, one anchored in strengthening interoperability, addressing operational complexities, and advancing collective security objectives. Through such engagements, defence diplomacy continues to serve as a vital instrument in building trust, reinforcing partnerships, and securing a more stable and peaceful Somalia.
