Successful peace support operations rely on effective coordination, professional competence and continuous training, especially in environments where air operations are central to mission success. It is against this backdrop that the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS), through its Aviation Services, officially opened the Air Liaison Officers Course for Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) personnel serving under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) Sector II.
The course was officially opened by the Deputy Sector Commander, Colonel Daniel Musau, on behalf of the Sector Commander. In his address, he commended UNSOS Aviation Services for organizing the training, describing it as a timely initiative that reinforces the operational readiness of the newly deployed AUSSOM Sector II Kenyan Contingent XV.
Col Musau noted that the course provides an important platform for participants to develop a common understanding of aviation procedures, strengthen coordination among aviation stakeholders and reinforce the safety that underpin successful mission support.
He emphasized that aviation remains a critical operational enabler within Sector II, facilitating troop movement, sustaining Forward Operating Bases, delivering essential supplies, supporting humanitarian activities and enabling lifesaving medical evacuations whenever required.
The Deputy Sector Commander encouraged participants to approach the training with commitment and professionalism by actively engaging with the experienced UNSOS instructors, sharing operational experiences and participating fully in both classroom discussions and practical exercises.
He expressed appreciation to the instructors from UNSOS Aviation Services for their continued partnership and dedication to enhancing aviation safety, interoperability and operational effectiveness within AUSSOM.
The Air Liaison Officers Course will strengthen interoperability between AUSSOM and UNSOS, enhance the safe and efficient delivery of air support and contribute to the mission’s ability to sustain operations, respond rapidly to emerging requirements and effectively support the Somali people.
