WHERE TEAMWORK MEETS COMPETITION

Sport provides an important avenue for building camaraderie, promoting teamwork and maintaining physical and mental well-being among personnel operating in demanding environments. In keeping with this spirit, Kenya Defence Force (KDF) personnel serving under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), led by the Commanding Officer Kismayo Sub Sector, Lieutenant Colonel Nura Wako, participated in a series of sporting activities in Kismayo.

The activities featured football, volleyball and chess, bringing personnel together in a relaxed yet competitive environment. The football matches provided an opportunity for participants to demonstrate endurance, tactical awareness and teamwork while the volleyball games tested coordination, communication and agility.

Speaking during the activities, Lt Col Wako said sporting engagements were important in strengthening bonds among personnel while providing an opportunity to refresh both body and mind.

“Sport brings people together. Beyond the competition, these activities give us an opportunity to interact, build stronger relationships and maintain the team spirit that is essential to our work,” he added.

Away from the playing field, chess offered a different form of competition, requiring participants to apply strategic thinking, patience and calculated decision-making. The inclusion of the board game provided an opportunity for personnel with different sporting interests to participate and compete.

The activities also provided personnel with an opportunity to interact beyond their routine duties, strengthening bonds and fostering cohesion within the team. Through healthy competition, participants reinforced the values of discipline, teamwork and mutual respect while promoting physical fitness and mental well-being.

The sporting activities reaffirmed the value of recreation in supporting personnel welfare and strengthening cohesion. By creating opportunities for personnel to connect beyond their routine duties, such engagements contribute to a stronger, more cohesive team capable of maintaining the focus and teamwork required to execute its mission.
