On the frontlines, survival depends more than weapons, tactics and courage. A clean environment is part of the mission itself. In the chaos of conflict, environmental stewardship is a quiet form of discipline that preserves health and good working environment. Even in the chaos of war, the conditions of the ground beneath your feet determine if a force merely fights or endures.
On this backdrop, Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) Troops serving under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), today 21 May 2026, participated in an environmental awareness and clean-up campaign at the Kismayo Sayid Mohammed Abdulle International Airport, alongside the Jubaland Security Forces (JSF), Sierra Leone Formed Police Unit (SLFPU) and the airport staff.
The joint exercise, led by the Airport Managing Director, Abdirahman Abshir, aimed to improve cleanliness, safety and the overall operational environment within the airport premises. Addressing the participants, Mr. Abshir, commended the teams for their commitment to maintaining a clean environment within the facility. He also lauded the troops, particularly the Kenya Defence Forces, for their continued support in strengthening security at the airport, which he described as a lifeline for the region.
The joint exercise forms part of a broader initiative by AUSSOM-KDF to enhance cooperation between AUSSOM Forces and the airport in support of the mission’s mandate. Additionally, the initiative reflects a shared commitment to maintaining security, enhancing operational readiness, and supporting the uninterrupted delivery of services.
