Education remains a strategic pillar in developing responsible, disciplined and productive citizens capable of contributing meaningfully to national development. Within military-supported learning institutions, the pursuit of academic excellence is reinforced by values such as discipline, integrity, resilience and commitment, creating an environment that empowers learners to achieve their full potential while preparing them for future leadership roles.
This commitment was demonstrated during the annual prize-giving ceremony at Nanyuki Garrison Secondary School, where the Commander 4 Brigade, Brigadier J. K. Maiyo, presided over an event dedicated to recognising outstanding academic achievement, exemplary conduct and professional dedication within the institution.
Held at the school premises, the ceremony brought together school administrators, teaching staff, students and invited stakeholders in a celebration of excellence and a reaffirmation of the importance of discipline and hard work in achieving success.
The event recognised exceptional performance among students, teachers and non-teaching staff based on previous Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results, continuous academic assessments and distinguished service within the school community. A total of 15 students and 15 teachers received awards in recognition of their commitment, diligence and outstanding achievements.
Addressing the gathering, Brigadier Maiyo congratulated the award recipients for their exemplary performance and encouraged them to maintain the discipline and determination that had earned them recognition.
“You have demonstrated excellence through discipline, commitment and hard work, and you must continue on that path while upholding the highest standards of personal conduct and responsibility,” he said.
The Brigade Commander underscored the strong link between discipline and academic success, noting that educational institutions play a critical role in shaping character and preparing young people to become responsible citizens. He challenged students to remain focused on their studies and continue striving for excellence in all aspects of their lives.
Brigadier Maiyo also addressed the growing concern over incidents of unrest and destruction of property in some learning institutions across the country. He urged students to reject indiscipline and embrace values that promote harmony, responsibility and respect for public resources.
“We must remain vigilant against tendencies of indiscipline such as unrest and destruction of property, and instead uphold values of discipline, loyalty and professionalism that define the Kenya Defence Forces,” he noted.
He further encouraged learners to adopt these principles as a foundation for responsible citizenship and constructive engagement within society.
The ceremony also provided an opportunity to reaffirm the enduring partnership between 4 Brigade and Nanyuki Garrison Secondary School. Brigadier Maiyo reiterated the Brigade’s commitment to supporting the institution in its pursuit of high educational standards and holistic student development.
As the school prepares candidates for the forthcoming KCSE examinations, the Brigade Commander challenged the learners to remain focused and intensify their efforts to achieve even greater academic success. He emphasized that sustained dedication, discipline and resilience would be key to attaining their educational goals.
The prize-giving ceremony highlighted the transformative role of education in building capable and responsible future generations. By recognising achievement and promoting a culture of excellence, institutions such as Nanyuki Garrison Secondary School continue to nurture young people who are well-equipped to contribute positively to their communities and to the nation.
