Defence Principal Secretary (PS) Dr. Patrick Mariru, alongside his counterparts from the Ministry of Interior and Aviation, Dr. Raymond Omollo and Mrs. Teresia Mbaika, respectively, today visited Wajir County to assess the progress of key national development projects being implemented in the region. The visit focused on the ongoing construction of the proposed 10,000 capacity Wajir Stadium and preparations for the expansion and improvement of Wajir International Airport, including the construction of a new Wajir State Lounge.
During the inspection, the team confirmed that construction works at the Wajir Stadium are progressing steadily, barely a month after the President H.E. Dr. William Samoei Ruto officially broke ground for the project during his development tour of Wajir County last month. The stadium is expected to significantly enhance sports infrastructure in the region and provide modern facilities that will nurture talent and support community engagement.
The delegation also reviewed plans for the upcoming expansion of Wajir International Airport and the construction of the Wajir State Lounge, projects that are set to commence soon. These initiatives aim to improve air transport infrastructure, enhance connectivity, and strengthen Wajir’s strategic role in regional development.
The projects are being implemented by the Ministry of Defence in collaboration with several government institutions, including the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, the State Department for Sports, the State Department for Aviation and Aerospace Development, and the County Government of Wajir, among other stakeholders.
During the visit, the delegation toured the project sites under the guidance of the County Government team led by Deputy Governor Ahmed Muhumed Abdi, who reiterated the county leadership’s support for the national government’s development agenda in the region.
The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the timely delivery of the projects as envisioned by the President, noting that the investments will spur economic growth, improve infrastructure, and create new opportunities for the people of Wajir and the wider North Eastern region.
